Cleaning Instructor, Mark Exner

Mark W. Exner began his career in the cleaning industry in 1974 while pursuing a degree in law enforcement. His first job was in a hospital’s environmental services department, where he handled everything from commode cleaning to sterilizing surgical rooms. Despite initially seeking a career in law enforcement, Mark found the work in cleaning both challenging and deeply fulfilling. Unable to secure a law enforcement position, he continued in cleaning and eventually established his own cleaning business.

Mark embarked on professional cleaning courses out of curiosity, eager to uncover any gaps in his knowledge. His instructor opened his eyes to numerous crucial aspects he had never encountered before, revealing the immense value of formal education in cleaning. Realizing how transformative this knowledge could be, Mark became passionate about sharing it with others.

Today, Mark leads instruction for CMI’s Certified Custodial Technician and Train the Trainer programs, along with specialized courses in Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, among others. Known for his approachable style and genuine care for his students, Mark has become a beacon in the industry, setting a high standard for respect and dedication. His role has evolved into educational product development for the cleaning sector, where he eagerly welcomes input for developing innovative new courses.
